Around Årø in two days in harsh conditions

E-mail Print PDF

Our springtime pontoonboat trip tested the gear to the max.

After the opening at River Skjern I headed for Kolding to my good friend Erling Skov. Last year we went to Bjørnø on a two day trip. Therefor we decided to redo the concept though on a different island. The choice was Årø. An island in Lillebælt that we had no knowledge of. We tried to find information on the internet about seatrout fishing on the island but nothing was to be found, so we decided to go explore ourselves.

We took the 14.15 ferry to the island and after an hour of packing the pontoon boats for two to three days of fishing we were afloat and fishing the first point in the early evening sun. The water was beautiful but the seatrout didn't seam to be in the area.

After a good night sleep (sorry about the snoring Erling...) we woke up to a windy day. We decided to row to the other end of the island and fish down wind on the other side of the island. After 4 km of rowing upwind, dragging the boat and carrying it over a levy we hit the surf and found that our trip around the island had to stop here. After a fun photo session in the surf were we tested the strength of the pontoon boats from pontonland.dk we decided to fish the same way back. After a great dinner at the local harbor inn we headed for some more protected waters at Kolding Fiord were we would fish the next day.

The rain was poring down and the wind was still gail the next morning. It took quite a large breakfast before we were mentally ready for another day in the boats. This time we found the fish. Typically for this season we find the fish over muddy or sandy bottom in protected coves where the water is just a bit warmer and less salty. We ended up with 6 seatrout before lunchtime and the end of this years easter trip.
